The place where the warmth of love can be felt, where all wishes come true, where life becomes a bit easier and more colorful, and where parents can rest. All of this can be found in one place, which is the grandparents’ home. Their love for grandchildren is unconditional. However, some gold agers are unfortunately forgotten by their families and reside in old homes; their eyes long for their families, yet there is no sign.
For this reason, Grandparents’ Day is celebrated to honor grandparents’ infinite love, support, and hard work worldwide. Grandparent’s Day is a way to cherish this relationship and spend time together.
History of Grandparent’s Day:
In 1969, a nine-year-old girl wrote a letter to the president suggesting a holiday dedicated to grandparents. After this letter, Marian McQuade, a United States citizen, initiated this cause. She led her life helping those who were old and were forgotten by their families. She introduced “Grandparent’s Day” to seek attention from everyone toward these golden-agers. McQuade wanted to introduce youth to the inspirational life grandparents had in history, the challenges they faced, their support, and the sacrifices they made to raise a generation like us.
Then, in 1977, Senator Randolph requested the president to allow a day for grandparents that was accepted and decided that the first Sunday after Labor Day would be National Grandparents Day.
4 Ways Grandparents Can Help Your Child to Be Cognitive and Emotionally Strong
1. They are good storytellers:
Grandparents are the best storytellers. Their stories revolve around reality, action, fiction, and experiences. Children are fast learners have vivid memories, and quickly absorb information.
2. Morals and values
Grandparents always try to correct the child’s conscience. They give your child a proper system of values, beliefs, standards, and a set of principles and ethics.
3. Teach Discipline
Grandparents are known for their soft nature towards children. Therefore, where parents fail to discipline their “stubborn as a mule” kid, grandparents turn that child into a docile. Due to observation skills, they tend to know the tricks and stories that can make children obey them without a need for warning and admonishing them
4. Sharing experience
While communicating with the grandchildren, these golden-agers talk a lot about themselves. This conversation does not include boasting about oneself but about the experiences they share, the fail and success stories, their decision-making process, and how things evolve in their era. These conversations are usually guiding principles for the kids and affect their decision-making in one way or another.
In the present era, the generation gap is constantly widening. The children are preoccupied with the bubble created by the excessive use of technology and social media platforms, which has caused a communication gap within the family. Parents must take heed and teach children the importance of family and the role of elders.
Love, fun, freedom, peace, and laughter are the blessings passed on from one generation to generation. Let’s cherish it!!
