About This Worksheet

Cob, job, rob and sob sound almost the same because they all end in -ob. Hearing and seeing that shared ending helps your child decode new words instead of guessing.

Your child shows what they know by pointing, circling and matching, a good fit for preschoolers who are not ready to write yet.

Activities in This Pack

Inside, your child will find five -ob activities:

  • CVC -ob word list to read together (cob, job, rob, sob)
  • Match each picture to its -ob word
  • Beginning sounds: find the first letter of each -ob word
  • Select the matching -ob word
  • Select the matching picture

Skills Your Child Practises

  • Recognising the -ob ending by sight
  • Visual matching of words and pictures
  • Reading -ob words such as cob and job
  • Blending sounds: c-o-b, cob
  • Hearing the beginning sound in rob and sob

How to Use This Worksheet

  • Say each -ob word aloud before your child looks for it on the page.
  • Stretch the sounds in rob: r-o-b, then say it fast.
  • Ask which letter is different in rob and sob.
  • Keep sessions short, one or two pages at a time.
  • When your child is confident, move on to the -ob reading and writing pack.

About the -ob Word Family

Every -ob word uses the short o sound, as in octopus. In this pack your child meets cob, job, rob and sob. When those feel easy, say other -ob words aloud together: Bob, mob, knob and blob. Ask your child which letter changes each time.

Say it together: “Bob has a job.” Point to each -ob word as you say it.
