About This Maths Test
This is a 50-minute mid-term paper for Year 5 (Grade 4). It checks four topics in one sitting. Section A covers place value (19 marks), Section B covers rounding decimal numbers (16 marks), Section C covers triangles (11 marks) and Section D covers symmetry (14 marks).
Questions go from short recall, such as writing numbers in digits or words, to reasoning, such as explaining a mistake or finding the smallest and largest numbers that round to 8. The last question in the symmetry section is a challenge for children who finish early.
The test is written for a general English-speaking audience. “Year 5” is used in England and many other countries and “Grade 4” in the United States, and children are about 9 to 10 in both. It is not tied to any school or exam board.
Skills Your Child Practises
- Reading and writing numbers with thousands, tenths and hundredths, in digits and in words

How to Use This Test
For teachers
- Use it as a mid-term check once place value, rounding, triangles and symmetry have been taught.
- Give each child a pencil and a ruler. Do not allow calculators.
- Set a 50-minute limit. Tell children each section’s marks so they can plan their time.
- Use the section totals (19, 16, 11, 14) to see which topic needs reteaching.
For homeschool parents
- Choose a quiet time and let your child work alone for up to 50 minutes.
- Mark it together afterwards. Ask your child to explain their working on the “explain” questions (Q6 and Q7).
- If one section scores low, spend a few days on that topic and retry only those questions.
- You can also split the test across two days, doing Sections A and B first, then C and D.
