Letter Tay (ت) Sound & Shape
Start by watching a short video together. Seeing and hearing ت modelled first gives your child a reference point before any activity begins.
2 Colour

Tay says /t/ — ت
Tay represents a soft, dental /t/ sound, made with the tongue near the teeth — gentler than its retroflex counterpart, Ttay. These activities connect the shape of the letter to its beginning sound using pictures your child already recognises.
5 Trace
Learn the Correct Stroke
Tay is a joining letter, so tracing the standalone form here comes before your child sees its shape shift slightly within full words. Tracing helps your child build the correct starting point and stroke direction before attempting it freehand.
6 Write Independently
No Dotted Guide
Once tracing feels comfortable, move to writing ت without the guide. If it feels tricky at first, that’s a normal early stage — steady practice, not correction, is what builds it into muscle memory.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between Tay and Ttay (with the small circle on top)?
Tay makes a soft, dental /t/ sound with the tongue near the teeth. Ttay is a retroflex sound, made with the tongue curled further back — noticeably harder and more clipped. They look almost identical in writing (Ttay adds a small circle above), so listening practice matters as much as visual identification here.
Is Tay hard to tell apart from Ttay just by shape?
Visually, yes — Ttay is written exactly like Tay with one small circle added above. Since the shapes are so close, listening to the two sounds side by side is usually more useful for a young child than relying on the dot alone.
Is it okay to teach Urdu letters out of the traditional Qaida order?
This Learning Path follows the standard Alif-to-Yay sequence used in most Pakistani schools and Qaida books, which is the safest default if your child will eventually sit a school admission test. If you’re teaching purely at home with no test in mind, grouping visually similar letters together (like the Bay/Pay/Tay/Say family) can also work well.
